Narrow City Lot Side Yard Makeover: Before and After

The Sideyard “Before” Photo:

This is a before shot from a month after I moved in, September 2014. Unfortunately, I don’t have true before pictures that show all the weeds (as tall as me!) that took over this garden the following spring. The side yard used to be a rock garden with scattered perennials. I had to move tons of flagstone (two pallets worth) and an exorbitant amount of overgrown weeds while trying to salvage some existing plants. That burning bush, though! Gorgeous.

And this isn’t even half of the weeds that were in this bed originally! I did not want chives as ground cover so I tried to remove them as best as I could. I am still struggling with the creeping leafed weed you see here.

This was the first phase of the sideyard renovation. We removed all the rocks, cleaned up the existing flowers, and then added a vintage brick border, which I love! See all those rocks on the pallet at the bottom of the photo? Those are just some of the rocks that were underneath the weeds.

I love the extra driveway space the brick paver border provides!

These seashells were left from the previous owner, so I wanted to re-incorporate them back into the garden. This is also my first attempt at combining annuals in a pot (Pentas, Verbena, & some type of vine).

  • 2 Burgundy Glow Bugleweed / Ajuga reptans (hoping this takes over as ground cover underneath the Rose of Sharon)
